Abstract
Phytochemicals are produced by medicinal herbs through secondary metabolism; these compounds have multiple pharmacological applications and can also be employed as building blocks for the production of effective medicines. Determining and measuring the phytochemical characteristics of the Combretum glatinusum (C. glatinusum) plant is therefore necessary to offer a scientific justification for its therapeutic benefits. Ethanol, water, and methanol were used to extract the Stem bark and leaves of C. glatinusum. Standard laboratory protocols were used to conduct both quantitative and qualitative phytochemical analysis. Qualitative analysis, of the leaves identified the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponin, tannins, terpenoid, and glycosides in methanol extracts. While, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponin, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, and glycosides were detected in ethanol extracts. Likewise, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, and glycosides were also detected in the aqueous extract. The presence of alkaloids, saponin, tannins, and steroids in methanol extracts was discovered in C. glatinusum Stem-bark. Ethanol extracts, however, demonstrated the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. While, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, and glycosides were also detected in the aqueous extract. According to quantitative analysis, the aqueous extract of C. glatinusum leaves had a greater content of alkaloids (1.50 mg/100 g). On the other hand, aqueous extract had higher concentrations of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids. The concentrations of these constituents were 1.67, 23.33, 80.58, and 20.28 mg/100g, respectively. Alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids were found in greater concentrations in the aqueous extract of C. glatinusum Stem-bark, although saponins, tannins, and glycosides were also found in the aqueous extract at 3.17, 23.33, 55.50, 51.83, 23.30, 21.21, and 26.71 mg/100g, respectively. Therefore, this research confirms the C. glutinusum plant's therapeutic benefits and lends further credence to its application in conventional medicine.
