Abstract
Tamarindus indica Linn (Family: Caesalpiniaceae) is traditionally used for the treatment various ailments such as diarrhea, typhoid, diabetes, wounds and malaria. The present study is aimed at providing scientific validation for the wound healing potential of the crude extract of Tamarindus indica stem bark in the excision albino rats model. The crude extraction was done using 100% methanol and qualitative phytochemical analysis were carried out using the standard methods. Excision wound models were used to determine the wound healing activity of Tamarindus indica. Wounds were treated with ointment formulation of the extract (10% and 50% w/w) and penicillin cream for 24days.Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponnins, cardiac glycosides and quinones. The result showed significant (p<0.05) dose dependent wound size reduction and epithelization in the extract treated groups compared to control. Significant %wound contraction in penicillin and extract treated groups were seen in day 9.These results demonstrate that the crude extract of Tamarindus indica stem bark possess wound healing activities. This justifies ethnomedicinal use of the plant for treating wounds and sores.

Key words: Wound healing, epithelisation, stem bark extract and wound contraction
