AFLATOXIN CONTENT OF CEREAL GRAINS IN KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
Aflatoxin contents of cereal grains in Kebbi were evaluated using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Samples of cereal grains were obtained using stratified sampling method. The results revealed that maize grains in Argungu markets had the highest aflatoxin contents of 187.90±14.83μg/kg while, the lowest content of 1.80 ± 7.84 μg/kg was obtained in maize grains from Aliero silos. The results revealed the presence of high level of aflatoxin in maize from Argungu L.G.A markets and low level in maize grains in Aliero silos. The high contents of aflatoxin in grains could be potentially toxic to human and animal heaths in the study area. This paper highlights on the danger of being exposed to aflatoxin and mycotoxins related cases more especially in the Sudan Savanna region of Kebbi State.
