BIOREDUCTION OF HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM USING DATE (Phoenix dactylifera L.) SEED EXTRACT: EXTRACT DOSE, CONTACT TIME AND TEMPERATURE

Abstract
Environmental and drinking water contamination by hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)] has become seriously alarming nowadays, leading to various ailment to human health. Therefore, reducing hexavalent chromium at a lower cost become imperative. This study aimed at determining bioreduction potential of date (Phoenix dactylifera) seed extract on Cr (VI). Parameters like; absorbance, temperature, contact time, and pH were determined using batch experiment, and each experiment was repeated three times. Absorbance was checked using spectrophotometer. The absorbance by date seed extract showed highest reduction of about 93% of Cr (VI) at 1 mg/l and pH 2, while lowest reduction of about 15% at 0.0001 mg/l and pH 9. Contact time showed the highest reduction of 97% at 140 min. and pH 2, lowest reduction of 34 % at 20 mins and pH 9. The bioreduction effect of temperature showed highest reduction of about 86 % at 1 mg/ml and 40℃, while lowest reduction of about 26% at 0.01 mg/ml and 5℃. This study delineated that, date seed has bioreduction potential of Cr (VI) to lowest minimum especially at a higher contact time and acidic medium. It can therefore be implemented as a bioremediation agent in reducing Cr (VI) to save cost.
